When Under the Hawthorn Tree was published in 1990, it achieved immediate success. She is best known for her famine-era historical children’s book Under the Hawthorn Tree, the first book of the Children in the Famine trilogy. Marita Conlon-McKenna is an Irish author of both children’s books and adult fiction. Marita Colon-Mckenna introduced thousands of Irish children to the horror of the Great Famine. Although Under the Hawthorn Tree is told through fiction, it tells the historically true story of the Irish Potato Famine during the 1840s.
